Marketing Shouldn’t Feel This Complicated: A Simpler Approach for Small Businesses

Allan MacDougall with some of the activ Head Office Team

Running a business means there is always something demanding your attention. Customers need looking after, finances need managing, work needs delivering and new business needs to keep coming in.

Marketing matters too, of course. The problem is that it often has to compete with everything else.

When business is quieter, you might find time to update the website, write a social media post or follow up a few enquiries. Then work gets busy again and marketing moves further down the list.

A few weeks later, you realise nothing has been posted for a while, an enquiry was never followed up, or the website still talks about a service you changed months ago.

This stop-start approach is extremely common. The problem is not usually a lack of ideas or effort. It is that there is no simple structure keeping everything moving.

Why Marketing Can Become Difficult to Manage

Marketing used to feel more straightforward. A business might have a website, place an advert and perhaps send the occasional email.

Today, there are far more options.

There is your website, SEO, Google Business Profile, social media, email marketing, content, online reviews and paid advertising, to name just a few. Each can play a useful role, but trying to do everything at once can quickly become overwhelming.

The answer is not necessarily to do more.

In many cases, it is to understand which activities are most useful for your business and make sure they work together.

A good website may attract visitors, but does it make it easy for them to get in touch? SEO may help more people find you, but what happens when they arrive? An enquiry may come in, but is there a reliable process for following it up?

Marketing works best when these individual parts support one another rather than being treated as unrelated jobs.

The Problem with Stop-Start Marketing

One of the biggest challenges I see when working with small businesses is inconsistency.

This rarely happens because the business owner does not care about marketing. Usually, it is because something more urgent has come along.

A busy period means marketing stops. When things quieten down, attention turns back to finding new work. Activity starts again, often from scratch, and the same cycle repeats.

The trouble is that good marketing tends to build over time.

Useful website content can strengthen your visibility in search results. Regular Google Business Profile updates can help keep your business active and relevant. Consistent follow-up can turn an initial enquiry into a future customer.

When activity repeatedly stops and starts, it becomes much harder to build momentum or understand what is actually producing results.

You Probably Don’t Need More Marketing Tasks

Most business owners I speak to are not looking for another long list of things they should be doing.

They already have enough of those.

What they often need is greater clarity:

  • What should we focus on?
  • Which marketing activities are actually worthwhile?
  • Is our website doing its job?
  • Are we missing opportunities?
  • What should happen next?

Having clear priorities can make marketing feel much more manageable.

For some businesses, that may mean improving an underperforming website before spending money attracting more visitors. For others, it could mean working on local SEO, creating regular content or making better use of their Google Business Profile.

The right approach depends on the business. That is why I believe marketing should start with understanding where you are now rather than simply adding more activity.

One Point of Contact Can Make a Big Difference

Another reason marketing becomes difficult is fragmentation.

You might have one person looking after your website, someone else helping with social media and another company providing SEO. Each may be doing a perfectly good job, but if nobody is looking at the whole picture, opportunities can easily be missed.

This is where a more joined-up approach helps.

At activ digital marketing North Somerset, I work directly with businesses to understand their goals, priorities and current challenges. Depending on what is needed, that support can include web design, SEO, content, Google Business Profile management, social media and wider digital marketing advice.

For my clients, this means they have one local point of contact rather than having to coordinate several different suppliers.

I am also part of the wider activ digital marketing network, so the personal support I provide locally is backed by additional knowledge, tools and expertise when required.

It is a combination I value: a direct working relationship with someone who knows your business, supported by the resources of a wider national network.

A Joined-Up Approach to Marketing

Effective marketing can be thought of as a connected journey.

First, people need to find you. That might happen through Google, your website, social media, a recommendation or another marketing channel.

Next, they need a reason to take an interest. Your website and content should quickly explain what you do, who you help and why they should consider choosing you.

Then you need to make it easy for them to take the next step, whether that is making a phone call, completing an enquiry form, requesting a quote or arranging a meeting.

Finally, there is follow-up. Not everyone is ready to buy immediately, so keeping in touch and building trust can be just as important as generating the original enquiry.

When these stages are considered together, marketing starts to feel less like a collection of unrelated tasks and more like a manageable process.

Marketing Support That Fits the Business

Small businesses do not all need the same level of marketing support.

A sole trader may need help keeping a website up to date and improving local visibility. A growing company might want more regular content, SEO or campaign support. An established business may simply want one reliable person to oversee its marketing and keep everything moving.

The support should fit the business, rather than forcing the business into a complicated package it does not need.

That has always been an important part of how I work. I prefer to understand the problem first, explain the options clearly and recommend what I believe will make a useful difference.

Sometimes that means a new website. Sometimes it does not.

Sometimes a few focused improvements to an existing website, clearer messaging or more consistent marketing can be the better place to start.

A Simpler Way Forward

There often comes a point when managing marketing in spare moments is no longer practical.

That does not mean everything you have done before was wrong. It may simply mean the business has reached a stage where a little more structure and support would help.

With a clear plan, sensible priorities and one point of contact, marketing can become much easier to manage. More importantly, it can become more consistent.

At activ digital marketing North Somerset, I help businesses across Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset make sense of their digital marketing and focus on the areas most likely to support their goals.

You do not necessarily need to do more marketing.

You may simply need a clearer way of managing it.
